The Best 80s Wedding Songs For Your Indie Wedding Reception Playlist

Cassette Tape from the 80s

The 1980s was a great time in music for a few reasons. It was the decade that formed the foundations of hip hop. Disco died and College Rock was founded. Many of the bands that Indie Wedding DJ loves today were influenced by bands such as New Order, The Cure, Yaz and The Smiths to name a few. With that said there are some great songs from the 80s that your mom and dad’s generation will love alongside you and your friends on the dance floor at your wedding reception. If done right, including 80s music in your wedding playlist will get everyone on the dance floor.

Below are some of the best 80s wedding songs. Like most of my other lists, I’ve put the songs into groups:

Pop / Very Popular – these songs should get your guests on the dance floor, even if your DJ just played Celine Dion’s – My Heart Will Go On:
Dexy’s Midnight Runners – Come on Eileen
Prince – Kiss
Phil Collins – Sussudio
J. Geils Band – Centerfold
Bruce Springsteen – Dancing In the Dark
Hall & Oates – You Make My Dreams Come True

All of the moms love this song:
Kenny Loggins – Footloose

For your British friends and/or family:
Madness- Our House
The Clash – Train In Vain
The Jam – Town Called Malice
Billy Idol – Dancing With Myself
David Bowie – Modern Love

These songs are some of my favourites, but their darker sound doesn’t always make them a hit on the wedding dance floor. If you’re a fan I suggest giving at least one a try:
New Order – Blue Monday
Yaz – Situation
The Cure – In Between Days
The Smiths – Panic

  1. I am very interested in (read: obsessed with LOL) weddings and wedding music, which is how I came across your site. Thanks for the great post! It was fun to read. I don’t know that my hipster friends would consider Hall and Oates indie. LOL. But I liked the list. 😀

    • I agree that Hall and Oates are not indie but for some reason, many of the indie fans love them. Glad you liked the list and thanks for the comment!

  2. New Order’s “Blue Monday” 😀 Well done that man

  3. It is nice list of songs. Good music in the wedding really make the wedding day memorable and joyful. There are many websites where many good wedding songs list are available.
