Alternative/Indie Garter Toss Songs

Indie Garter Toss SongsThe garter toss isn’t a super popular tradition at most of the weddings that I DJ, but for those of you are going to have a garter toss, below is a list of some alternative garter toss songs. I’ve broken the songs into different categories to make it easier for you (click the link to view a YouTube video of the song):

Dig A Little Deeper by Peter Bjorn and John
Don’t Turn The Light On by Chromeo
Howlin’ For You by The Black Keys
Let’s Make Love And Listen To Death From Above by CSS
Fell in Love With a Girl by White Stripes

I loved Flight of the Conchords and I think that this is a funny garter toss song:
Business Time by Flight of the Conchords

Here are a few pop songs for the garter toss:
I Believe in a Thing Called Love by The Darkness
Sexyback by Justin Timberlake
Where’s Your Head At by Basement Jaxx

I Know What Boys Like by The Waitresses
Love Train by The O’Jays
Treat Her Like a Lady by The Temptations
Shake Your Groove Thing by Peaches and Herb

I’ve also included a couple of the cheesy/fun classics, just in case you want to go that route:

Top 10 Motown and Soul Wedding Songs

Soul, along with its sub-category, Motown, are great genres for wedding dancing music. Older guests will find your soul wedding songs nostalgic and I think the popularity of Cee Lo Green’s F**k You is proof of the recent revival in the popularity of the soul sound with a younger generation.

I always like starting the reception dancing off with some soul and motown and I think that you should encourage your DJ to do the same. A 5-10 song set of soul music is usually is enough to convince those who are eager to get on the dance floor to start dancing, and it is great background music for those guests who want to head to the bar after a long dinner.

Below are 10 of my Motown/soul favourites for filling your wedding reception dance floor. Click on any of the songs listed below to hear the song.

Do You Love Me by The Contours
This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You) by The Isley Brothers
ABC by Jackson 5
Nowhere to Run by Martha and The Vandellas
Ain’t Too Proud To Beg by The Temptations
Respect by Aretha Franklin
The Clapping Song by Shirley Ellis
Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours by Stevie Wonder
You Can’t Hurry Love by The Supremes
I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) by The Four Tops

The Best 80s Wedding Songs For Your Indie Wedding Reception Playlist

Cassette Tape from the 80s

The 1980s was a great time in music for a few reasons. It was the decade that formed the foundations of hip hop. Disco died and College Rock was founded. Many of the bands that Indie Wedding DJ loves today were influenced by bands such as New Order, The Cure, Yaz and The Smiths to name a few. With that said there are some great songs from the 80s that your mom and dad’s generation will love alongside you and your friends on the dance floor at your wedding reception. If done right, including 80s music in your wedding playlist will get everyone on the dance floor.

Below are some of the best 80s wedding songs. Like most of my other lists, I’ve put the songs into groups:

Pop / Very Popular – these songs should get your guests on the dance floor, even if your DJ just played Celine Dion’s – My Heart Will Go On:
Dexy’s Midnight Runners – Come on Eileen
Prince – Kiss
Phil Collins – Sussudio
J. Geils Band – Centerfold
Bruce Springsteen – Dancing In the Dark
Hall & Oates – You Make My Dreams Come True

All of the moms love this song:
Kenny Loggins – Footloose

For your British friends and/or family:
Madness- Our House
The Clash – Train In Vain
The Jam – Town Called Malice
Billy Idol – Dancing With Myself
David Bowie – Modern Love

These songs are some of my favourites, but their darker sound doesn’t always make them a hit on the wedding dance floor. If you’re a fan I suggest giving at least one a try:
New Order – Blue Monday
Yaz – Situation
The Cure – In Between Days
The Smiths – Panic

Indie Wedding Playlist – Music for Dancing

In case you didn’t know Indie Wedding DJ Toronto loves indie dance music. What indie fan doesn’t enjoy dancing to LCD Soundsystem or Hot Chip? (by the way, if you consider yourself an indie dance fan and you don’t know these bands, then look them up NOW). When making an indie playlist for a wedding, I always try to err on the side of poppier sounding indie songs. For example, I am a huge fan of Sleigh Bells and Crown On the Ground is an awesome indie dance song, yet I feel like grandma might not appreciate the hard beats as much as me.

Before I go much further, I want to make sure to remind you of my previous post which included some of my favourite indie dance tracks: Indie Music For Your Wedding. Now that the self promotion is over with I’d love to share with you some awesome indie music for dancing:

Broken Social Scene – Almost Crimes [Radio Kills Remix] This one is a little more risky, as Almost Crimes doesn’t exactly have a strong beat that most people like to hear when their dancing, but the song is light, fun and awesome.

Feist – My Moon My Man [Boys Noize Remix][*] Feist is about as pop as indie music gets. My Moon, My Man is one of my favourite songs of hers and although the original version works well, the Boys Noize Remix gives the track an amazing dancy beat.

M.I.A. – Paper Planes Some of you may say that M.I.A. isn’t indie. Some of you may say that this is too easy of a choice. Some of you are probably so sick of this song. I still think that this is a great track and I love to hear it while I’m on the dance floor.

Phoenix – 1901 Due to some appearances in different commercials, your great aunt might even recognize this track.

The Ting Tings – Great DJ (Calvin Harris Remix) Indie pop with a strong enough sound that even your nerdy cousin will stay on beat. How could you go wrong?

That’s all for now folks. I’d love it if you’d add your indie favourites in the comments.

Alternative Father Daughter Wedding Dance Songs

Father and Bride dance

We have all been to weddings where the father bride dance song was a little too cheesy or slightly incestuous. Here are some music suggestions from Indie Wedding DJ that could be appropriate for a bride and her dad if they are trying to keep the party a little more lively and want to keep their eyes dry.

Non-sappy songs that are appropriate for a dance between a father and his daughter

If your dad likes classic rock then these might be perfect for you:

This song could be cute:

You can’t go wrong with these songs which have no lyrics:

Glenn Miller – Moonlight Serenade (Classic slow dance song without lyrics)

Dick Dale & The Del-Tones – Miserlou (surf rock)
